Plinxmas Vidvent Calendar - Day 16!

Come with me now on a journey through time, back to the halcyon days of December 2008. Plinx wasn't yet 1 year old and was about to celebrate its first Christmas. D'awwwww. That's when I posted a treasure trove of comic strips featuring Calvin & Hobbes and their... unique snowmen. Anyway, fast-forward to the present day and static images just won't cut it anymore. This is the web circa 2011 and we need moving pictures, dangit!

So it's lucky that a couple of guys with time and talent to spare have created a video tribute to said strips using the twin disciplines of modelling and computer wizardry.

Hiya.
Just wanted to call your attention to a webcomic series that's just been started by my pal Alex. It's a simple 3-panel type affair and the concept is explained in the title:

Setup, Beat, Puke.



Yup, each comic ends with Alex himself dropping a barf. It may not seem like much on its own, but when you see them all together... well it makes me laugh. And hey! it's not like there isn't a success story out there which uses repeated panels each comic, right?

Fools! I'll Destroy Them All.

So yeah, April Fools day was a couple of days ago. I thought about doing something to try and fool you guys but for one thing, I don't think enough people read this blog for anyone to notice on the day and also, I didn't think about it until the morning of the 1st of April so I would only have managed something a bit half arsed.

However! There is a grand tradition of Fools on the web. Every year, certain websites will do something to try and hornswoggle the general populace. I'm going to recap some of this year's good ones in case you missed 'em.

Unfortunately, I can't show you YouTube's 'videos as text' thing because they took it down as soon as AFD was over. Losers.

However, remember XKCD? Well, that looked a little different this year, converting the whole site into a command-line based interface. Check it: UniXKCD!

Sites like Firebox, IWOOT & ThinkGeek have a tendency to release fake products like IWOOT's Universal Bark Translator, their iPhone to iPad convertor, Firebox's Cavalcade of Whimsy, ThinkGeek's Canned Unicorn and (my personal favourite) Screaming Chef Knife!

Since I started this blog, I'm hoping I have picked up a couple of regular readers at least.
But I'm sure some of you just don't spend enough time online to be able to afford a few minutes to peruse the stuff that I tirelessly winkle out of the overstuffed internet for you. That's fair enough, right?

It was a hot night, the kind that makes the air crackle with electricity. Every second that ticks by loaded with possibilities. The sky hangs heavy with menace. Somebody, somewhere is in trouble.

Ok yeah, I can't write bad-ass noir fiction for toffee. But hey, a lot of writers create good stuff without ever having to go down the pulpy noir route, right? I mean, it's not like EVERYTHING is better if it's brooding and faux-40s.



Ok, so I guess I was wrong. Noir-style posters can really sex up an already impressive story.

Sleuth Diplomacy.

Right, this is going to be a pretty epic update. I am here today to talk to you about MS Paint Adventures. This will not be a link for the feeble-minded or sissy-panted.

MS Paint Adventures is a webcomic... of sorts. It's also a choose-your-own-adventure story... of sorts. To some extent it's a freeform experiment in user-submitted narrative... of sorts. What it most definitely is though, is bloody marvellous.

I'm a little late to the party in reporting this one. I've actually been reading it for a couple of months now but it has existed for much longer. It is currently spreading like wildfire though so I don't want you guys to be left out of the loop.

The way it works, in a nutshell: The overlord author (Andrew Hussie) starts a story with a single picture and then solicits suggestions from the community as to what should happen next. The best suggestion is drawn/animated and then there is another round of suggestions... and so on.

and the situation as of today looks like THIS.

Pretty cool, huh? I'm not gonna lie to you, if you're interested in this, it's gonna cost your a fair chunk of your time. The current story has been running for over a year. Having read the whole dang thing though, I can tell you it's been worth it.

So yeah, if your PULCHRITUDE is high enough, I urge you to take on an MS Paint Adventure!

PlinXmas Advent Calendar: Day 5!

I've never really read Calvin & Hobbes. If you're unfamiliar with the concept, it's a set of comic strips about a lad (Calvin) and his stuffed tiger (Hobbes). Several people have told me that they're really good but I just never checked any of it out. Well, I just stumbled on this treasure trove and I may have to rethink my position somewhat. Essentially this is a collection of just the strips where Calvin builds snowmen. Sounds crap, right? Well have a gander at this and then see what you think:

Confession. Part 2.

I need a bit more sweet release from my webcomic obsession (2 new ones added since last we broached the subject!) so allow me to present another set of virtual drawings that have made me their slave. This time, it is XKCD. The art style may be simplistic. Well, it doesn't get much simpler than stick figures. Any schmo can draw them, right? But the punchlines are often far from conventional. I consider myself to be a man of some intelligence, and parts of the stuff in this comic (especially the bits involving higher mathematics) are way beyond me. So, I hear you cry, what chance to we have? Well it's not all ubergeekery. Most of it is just plain funny. Take. A. Look. For. Yourself.
